Day 043 - Power to the person

Workout by getting where you want to go under your own power.        Training via ActiveMail

Getting to Work or to Your Favorite Place Workout

This is a favorite workout of mine because it requires some creativity and planning. It's tough to commit to using human power to do a favorite activity or go to work. Your task is to create a way for you to either get to work or to a place you were going on a certain day and to do this as a workout rather than drive a car.

Warm up by putting on your heart rate monitor and designing a plan. You may have to contact rapid transit and get a schedule and ride the transit system a portion of the way. But use your bicycle, your walking or running shoes, or your inline skates to go the balance of the distance. Make this a 1 hour workout and note your heart rate.

Some helpful tips:

-- You might need to carry a backpack for your personal items or a change of clothes.

-- You might decide you need a ride back home afterwards. Use rapid transit or arrange with a friend to help you here.

-- If you don't work at a job that involves a commute, select one day a week to use your own horsepower and your heart rate monitor to get you to the health club or to the grocery store or wherever you need to go. Your commitment is to leave your car at home once each week.

-- Commuting or travelling under your own power once a week rather than driving a car is worth about 5 pounds of fat a year.
