Day 034 - Climbing cadence

90-minute ride at RPE 6-8        Training via ActiveMail

RIDE FOR 90 MINUTES AT RPE 6-8: What's the best pedal speed (cadence) for climbing? Most experienced riders climb at about 80 rpm. Find out what your climbing cadence is by counting how often your right pedal hits the bottom of the pedal stroke during one minute. If you can't maintain this cadence on the climbs in your area without working too hard, consider a bike with a triple crankset (that is, with three chainrings instead of two in front) to give you some lower gears. You'll be able to turn the pedals at a higher rate and climb more comfortably. Check with your local bike shop; they can often retrofit your current bike for much less money than a whole new bike would cost.
