Day 022 - Check your headset

Rest day        Training via ActiveMail

IT'S A REST DAY: Here's an important mechanical part that's often ignored: the headset. This is what holds the forks to the frame. If the bearings are badly adjusted, the parts can be ruined and your bike may handle poorly. To check it, stand beside the bike and squeeze the front brake. Rock the bike forward and back. If the headset feels loose and/or makes a clunking sound, it's out of adjustment. Next, lift the front wheel slightly and see if the handlebars turn smoothly. If they tend to settle with an audible click into a straight-ahead position, the headset is too tight and you've scored the metal races that hold the bearings. Don't get upset; just head for a good bike shop. They can make the adjustments or repairs.
