RIDE 1 HOUR AT RPE 6: If you ride often, you're going to encounter wind. When the breeze is from behind, you'll zip along effortlessly. But strong crosswinds can be disconcerting because you may find it hard to control the bike, and headwinds are just plain tough, physically and mentally. First the mental part -- don't fight headwinds. You'll just get frustrated. After all, a force of nature that can power huge sailing ships isn't something you can overcome with muscle power alone! Simply accept the wind, gear down so you can ride comfortably, and keep pedaling. If a gusty crosswind threatens to push you to one side, relax your grip on the handlebars and make sure your arms are loose with a slight bend in the elbows. Your arms will act as a shock absorber and the bike will track straight ahead even when those unexpected gusts hit.
