Day 013 - Drinking and riding

45-minute ride at RPE 6        Training via ActiveMail

RIDE 45 MINUTES AT RPE 6: Take an easy spin today because tomorrow you're going to ride longer. Because you'll need to drink a lot during tomorrow's ride, today is a good time to practice taking your bottle out of the cage, drinking, and replacing the bottle -- all the while keeping your eyes on the road ahead. Here's how, according to Skip Hamilton, a coach at the Carpenter/Phinney Bike Camps: Grasp the handlebars with one hand near the stem, so that if you inadvertently turn your shoulders, it won't affect your steering as much as if you were holding the bars farther out. Without looking down, reach for the bottle with your other hand and grasp it with your thumb and first two fingers. At the same time, let your ring and little fingers lightly touch the cage so you get a feel for where it is. Drink from the bottle, then as you reach down to replace it, feel for the cage with those two fingers to guide the bottle into place. Practice this move in a safe parking lot a couple of times before you perform it on the road.
