Day 008 - Bike check

Rest day        Training via ActiveMail

IT'S A REST DAY: You've been riding for a week so it's time to give your bike a quick check to make sure it's running smoothly and safely. First, examine the tires in a strong light, looking for cuts in the tread or sidewall or embedded shards of glass or rock that might get pushed through the casing and puncture the tube. If you see any, dig them out with the corner of a screwdriver's blade. Next, give your brake levers a squeeze to see if they come too close to the handlebars when they're fully compressed. Also, glance at the brake pads--they shouldn't rub on the wheel rims when you aren't touching the brakes and they should be the same distance from the rim. Check the quick-release skewers on both wheels for tightness (the "skewer" is the lever attached to the wheel hub that holds the wheel tightly in the bike frame). Finally, look at your chain and spray on some lube if it looks dry or makes a clattering or squeaking noise when you're pedaling.
