Day 020 - Stretch-out a great week!

1200-2000 yards/meters, mixing up swimming, pulling and kicking.        Training via ActiveMail

TODAY'S WORKOUT IS A LOOSEN UP--CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT WEEK!

First, an observation to motivate you to kick hard:
Almost without exception, the best swimmers I have known have also been great kickers. For example, Ray Carey, my college roommate and a teammate on the 1996 Olympic Team in the 200 butterfly, was not always an incredible kicker. But one year before the Olympic Trials, Ray became infected with a rare virus that infects a nerve in the shoulder, and was unable to lift his arm over his head. For six months, he was unable to swim or pull, but became the strongest kicker in the world (as an example, he once butterfly kicked 12 x 150 long course on 2:05). I was his roommate that year, and I remember one day he realized that he could no longer fit into his old jeans because his thighs were so much thicker and stronger!
With just a few months of full stroke training after coming back from his injury, Ray went a best time in the 200 butterfly at the Trials and qualified for the Olympic Team. This accomplishment was a testament not only to Ray's tenacity, but also to the importance of a strong kick.

Swim between 1200 and 2000 yards/meters, mixing up swimming, kicking, and pulling. Include at least 200 y/m of the same drills we have been working on this week. Emphasize what your body has learned from these drills when you are swimming and pulling: especially focus on good hip movement.

Breaststroke/butterfly tipping drill
Breaststroke sculling
Breaststroke wall-kicking
Underwater breaststroke swimming
Breaststroke hands with a dolphin kick
