Ride 'n' Tie

The cycling variation on the “one horse, two riders” problem. One rides ahead, drops off the bike, while the other runs, picks up the bike and leapfrogs the runner.

For: Cyclists, Runners, Triathletes.
Time: 60 minutes.
Description: The cycling variation on the “one horse, two riders” problem. One rides ahead, drops off the bike, while the other runs, picks up the bike and leapfrogs the runner.
Equipment needed: Bike and a partner.

The original ride ’n’ ties use horses, but bikes work just as well. You’ll need a partner or two (preferably about the same size), one bike, and a bike lock. Pick a loop or route that will take you about one hour to run.

Here’s the routine:
  1. One of you is designated the first rider, the other the runner.
  2. You both take off at the same time, ideally in the same direction (hard to find the bike otherwise).
  3. The rider heads up the road 5 to 10 minutes, gets off the bike, locks it (if necessary) and takes off running.
  4. The original runner finds the bike, unlocks it and takes off after the runner, passing them in a few minutes.
  5. The person now riding continues for 5 to 10 minutes, gets off, locks up and starts running again.
  6. The sequence continues until you’ve completed your one-hour route.
  7. You can play around with the times riding and running. For example, you may elect to switch every 2 to 3 minutes or 15 minutes.
