They will take make the measurement of intensity very easy and allow you to learn the association between HR and perceived exertion (how you feel). Unfortunately, measuring your pulse via your wrist or carotid pulse (neck) in not very accurate, especially at high exercise intensities. Good monitors are available for under $100.
