Day 002 - Front balance

Day off (optional drill practice)        Training via ActiveMail

TODAY WE'LL LEARN THE FRONT-BALANCE (FB) DRILL:

This week's drills will teach you the correct positions and motions that will eventually be part of your efficient freestyle stroke. As we said yesterday, practice these drills in the water this week, using flippers for any drill you haven't yet mastered. Today's new drill is the Front Balance (FB) drill. Push off from the wall on your stomach, with both arms at your sides, and begin kicking easily. Keep the crown of your head in line with your spine, nose pointed toward the bottom of the pool. Lightly press your buoy (remember, that's your lungs) toward the bottom. This will raise your hips to the surface. When you need to breathe, lift your head straight up in front and get a breath of air. Then put your head down so the crown is in line with your spine, and press your buoy again. When you lift your head, your hips and legs sink rapidly toward the bottom. Also, note that as soon as you get your head in line with your spine and press your buoy, you get balanced again. When you're balanced, the back quarter of your head, your shoulder blades, and the cheeks of your butt will be exposed to the air.
