Day 001 - Winter Sports Conditioning

Introduction to the program        Training via ActiveMail

Welcome to your winter sports conditioning program!

This program is a fresh approach to sports-specific training that's fun, convenient, and results-oriented. Best of all, it will help you dramatically improve your athletic performance and allows you to spend time outdoors. This program has been designed for both the winter sports athlete and the fitness enthusiast who would like to develop new skills and add a new dimension to their current routine. Before you begin this sports-specific program, it's important that you have a solid base of strength, cardiovascular, and flexibility conditioning.

Winter sports are not only about physical strength; kinesthetic awareness (also known as spatial awareness) and mental centering play a very important role. A skillful winter athlete moves gracefully and efficiently over all types of terrain and snow conditions, such as steeps, moguls, tight trees, light powder, heavy crud, and ice. Through this conditioning program, you will learn to incorporate the mind with the body for improved performance on and off the snow.

Another important tip: You play outside, so why not train outside, also? Whether you live in Midtown Manhattan or Malibu Beach, you can create your own outdoor gym with a little scouting and creativity. Every community offers a variety of unique topography: parks, playgrounds, hills, hiking trails, rock formations, tracks, stadium stairs, beaches, and streams. Ideally, you should find an area that has some built-in obstacles such as concrete blocks for wall-sits, picnic tables or grass for ab work, boulders for push-ups, benches for triceps dips, tree limbs for pull-ups, and steps for single-leg dips. Play it safe with a little investigation: Check to make sure that the props you use are sturdy enough to support your weight.
