IT'S A REST DAY: While you're recovering from the previous three days of riding, take a minute to check your riding preparedness. On your bike, you should carry the following emergency items: a spare tube, patch kit, tire levers and identification. Include a small tool kit like the Ritchey CPR-14 ($30) that contains a selection of wrenches, Allen keys, a spoke wrench, and two screwdrivers but weighs only two ounces. These items fit in a small pack that straps under your seat. Don't forget to include $5, wrapped in a plastic bag, and a couple of quarters for emergency phone calls. You'll also need a pump that attaches to your bike in case you get a flat.
