Day 001 - Welcome to bicycling fitness!

IT'S A REST DAY: Welcome to your eight-week cycling foundation program. By the end of two months, you'll be able to ride comfortably for 25-30 miles or about two hours. This program works great for general fitness. If that's your goal, just do the eight-week program, then repeat the final four weeks to maintain your fitness. If your goal is to ride longer -- say a metric "century" (100 kilometers, which is 62 miles) or a full "century" (100 miles), this program will establish a solid base for those longer distances. Daily rides are based on time rather than distance. The reason: the distance traveled in headwind versus tailwind conditions, or in climbing versus descending, means that the number of miles you cover isn't a good measure of the effort expended. The program also contains daily tips on riding technique, fitness, and equipment to make your rides more enjoyable and to make you a more knowledgeable cyclist.
