Day 001 - All-around Training, Week 1

Bike (Key): Level 2, 80 minutes        Training via ActiveMail

WELCOME TO THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR IRONMAN TRIATHLON WORKOUT! Congratulations on choosing such an ambitious goal. If possible, try to begin this program on a MONDAY. Because a majority of people following this program will have more training time on weekends, the bulk of the long workouts will occur on the sixth and seventh days of each weekly cycle. Fridays are days off, to rest you from the week and to prepare you for the weekend. Mondays are workout days, but as a rule the intensity is easy to moderate. Now down to business, because there's no time to waste. TODAY, YOU'LL BE DOING A MODERATE 80-MINUTE BIKE RIDE. Choose a predominantly flat course to ensure a good loosen-up ride that will not leave you sore and feeling broken down tomorrow. Taking on an Ironman distance triathlon is a huge challenge physically, mentally, and even socially. The training puts strains on your free time that you would usually spend with family and friends. Your time is now going to be spent getting yourself ready for this fantastic endeavor. One of the first things to do as you embark on this program is to develop a support system. In other words, inform your family and friends of your mission and get them to understand what this means to you and what it will entail. Be frank with others and with yourself. You and your family will have to make sacrifices along the way. Add up the weekly training time and add in the time it takes to get to and from workouts, plus the extra time you are going to need to recover (sleep or nap) from progressively more difficult workouts. Be creative in your training planning. Try to incorporate loved ones into your program in some way. I will introduce my overall training philosophy, methods, and how to read the daily workouts over the next several days of this program, so if you have questions, don't panic! You'll probably see them answered soon.
