Partner Pacing--Walking

A tandem workout for walkers/runners of similar abilities. The leader sets pace and direction, while the follower matches the effort and route.

Time: 45 minutes.
Description: A tandem workout for walkers/runners of similar abilities. The leader sets pace and direction, while the follower matches the effort and route.
Equipment needed: Running attire and a partner.

This workout is a variation on the “follow the leader” game we all played as kids. As serious adults the objectives are only a little more stringent. You are, after all, trying to get some exercise.

Achieve a level of consensus that you and your partner are going to take it easy on each other for the first 10 minutes out the door. Flip a coin to see who is going to lead first.

The leader gets to choose the pace and route for the first five minutes. The follower is obliged to go along with as little resistance or whining as possible.

One rule regarding the route, it can’t be the same old route. You have to go somewhere you haven’t gone before.

After five minutes, switch roles. The same rules apply.

Repeat until you have each had a chance to lead three times for a total of 30 minutes.

Walk or jog easily for five minutes, which should bring you back to your starting place (plan accordingly).
