Lunch Hour Backpacking

Add a small backpack and some weight to your walking routine, and get yourself ready for a wilderness trip, or at least gain some strength. This workout is ideal if your weekends are spent hiking in the woods.

For: Walkers, Hikers, Multisport.
Time: 60 minutes.
Description: Add a small backpack and some weight to your walking routine, and get yourself ready for a wilderness trip, or at least gain some strength. This workout is ideal if your weekends are spent hiking in the woods.
Equipment needed: Small backpack.

Your lunch hour is plenty of time to take a mini-backpacking trip. Bring a small backpack to work, throw your laptop and maybe a book or two to give you 10 to 15 pounds on your back, and head outside. The added weight of the pack will add a strength element to your walk and will help you get ready for a weekend trip away from civilization. If future plans call for a trip where you’ll be carrying a hefty load, say over 40 pounds, then up the weight on your lunch trips to 20 to 30 pounds.

Begin by strapping on your pack and heading out the door. Make sure if you are going to carry over 20 pounds that your pack is up to the task. It should fit well with the weight being supported by your hips, not all on your shoulders.

If you are fortunate to have a park or some woods nearby, head there and explore the area, but don’t piddle around. Walk at a brisk pace for at least 45 minutes of your precious hour. If you are landlocked in a concrete jungle, then make do with the streets, head to the market, pick up lunch, and walk back, get something heavy to eat, like a watermelon. You can also use the trusty stairs if you’re using this workout to get ready for a trip that includes lots of climbing.

This is also a great time to break in any new footwear you might be inclined to use on a trip to the great outdoors.
